description
The opening up of a new access to the Montjuïc Olympic installations in 1992 brought with it the sitting of a new city block, trapezoidal in form, facing the Passeig de la Zona Franca, destined for use as controlled-rent housing.
Given that controlled-rent housing, especially on such a small scale as here, permits only a minimum of variation in plan types, the concept centred on the urban layout, with a number of small improvements facilitated by the economical planning of the stairway. The construction is concentrated along the boundary of three sides of the site, in this way creating an interior courtyard which opens up to a view of the Olympic “agora”, respecting the neighbouring neo-renaissance church and permitting the presence of a more extended public garden with access beneath the block of the main facade.
A series of small, coloured inclined planes invites the free positioning of plants on the balconies and punctuates the sober brick facades.
