The confronting of the small railway station dating from 1984 with a larger and more complex structure –the line no longer terminating here, and being expanded to two tracks- presented a major conceptual difficulty. The existing station had been laid out on the basis of a wall parallel to the train line, presenting two clearly differentiated episodes on its two sides: the lightweight canopy, suspended from the wall by cables, and the compact volume opened up by the large flattened access arch containing the station offices.
The new station is conceived as a great single-span bay bridged by specially designed exposed beams that extend out beyond the wall of the main facade, thus creating an external transition space in the access to the station.
A lightweight curving metal roof, which projects out beyond the partitions and the wall itself, covers the entire complex.
