description
The Cultural Centre for “la Caixa” occupies the building known as the Palau Macaya (Puig i Cadafalch, 1901), originally a Modernista private residence now classed as a Historic Artistic Monument of National Interest. The building was subsequently adapted, together with various annexes, for cultural use, coming to constitute one of the city’s most active centres for the presentation of art exhibitions. The building has retained the original facades, entrance and central courtyard, with the staircase leading up to the piano Nobile in very good condition; the interiors, however, have been radically transformed.
The commission addressed the adaptation of the entrance, the roofing of the Modernist courtyard, and the redesign of the exhibition rooms, together with the systematisation of the alterations to the original spaces, which nevertheless already fulfilled their required function of providing fluid spaces appropriate to the circulation of exhibition visitors.
